drove up to jacksonville this year (2008) with ginger-slut aka julia to see bob weir & ratdog at the wanee festival. this picture was taken during a cloudy part of the day, while everyone gathered to see moe. julia and i personally don't like moe. so after i snapped this picture we headed over to the small mushroom stage and watched a three-man group called porter batiste stoltz bang out jams so funky your nuts (or ovaries) would tingle. other highlights were tinsley ellis, derek trucks and susan tedeschi, soul stew revival, ratdog, and the wanee family jam.
i took this right as ratdog began their set. that's bob in the white still tuning up while the rest of the members play the intro to 'jack straw'. highlights of this show were a cover of bob dylan's 'a hard rains gonna fall' and the beatle's song 'come together'. during come together a dude fucked up on either mad drugs or alcohol climbed up on top of the guard fence, sang a couple lyrics, then collapsed to the floor and had to be dragged out by paramedics. all this happened like ten feet in front of me; ratdog then closed with 'one more saturday night' and 'touch of grey' as their encore.
this was on the morning after the final day of the festival. this guy was packing up all his shit when he noticed me taking a picture of his volkswagen bus; he then asked if i wanted to photograph his dog. he went on about how his dog gets all depressed when these concerts are over and it's time to go home. this dude and his dog are very alike; veteran hippie concert-goers. they make friends that they'll probably never see again, or atleast until the next gathering.
the campground was fucking beautiful. livin down south, i'd never seen trees like these in florida. the grass wasn't the same either. all weekend it was really nice out, cold enough to wear a sweater but not at the point where you need one.
